Miss Mexico, Esmeralda Solís Gonzáles, surprised the whole world when she made an unconventional decision last week. In the Miss Mexico Facebook page, she announced that she would trade her glamorous life to a life of austerity and service, Catholic News Agency reports.

“I was very happy with everything I had, but it does not compare with the happiness that God now places in my heart.”

Gonzáles, 20, was crowned last year as a beauty queen. She was born into a Catholic family and her declaration to join the Poor Clare Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament went viral on social media.

“You really don’t know what religious life is until you’re within it. So far I have been able to see from another perspective what the world is and what it offers you,” she said.

The young novice revealed that her calling for the religious vocation has always been present in her life but she didn’t really consider it seriously. In March this year, after a month of discernment, she finally said yes to God.

Gonzáles believes that God allowed her to experience life such as winning a beauty pageant and being a nutritionist to prepare her for a life of serving Him. “I realized that I had to make room in my life to know what it was that God had planned for me.”

She encourages others to follow God’s calling. “All you need to do is receive him with a lot of peace, joy and confidence.”
